Obviously it's also an insanely powerful colour correction, audio and compositing program so it's worth learning anyway. The free version is basically the full version minus a few small inconveniences and it will rip through creating Avid media faster than Avid will, it will often read and convert formats that MC can't so can be used as a great Swiss army knife file converter, and if you don't want to pay for Mocha, then the Resolve stabiliser is better than the Avid one so you can kick out a shot to Resolve, stabilise it and then bring it back in looking better. It's not a plugin but Davinci Resolve should be in everyone's toolkit. I also use Photoshop all the time for creating clean plates - either for within Avid or for use in Mocha. Most of the above plugins can be had as a free trial so you can try them out.
You install plugins just like any other program - run the installer and they pop up in the effects pane within MC. They were also giving away Title Studio a while back for free - not sure if they're still doing that though.īlend-X will give you blending modes within Avid and is free. Baselight for Avid is the gold standard for colour grading within Avid but it's $$.īoris also have a couple of really good free standalone programs like Particle Illusion which has a million various particle generators - a lot of which are actually really good. The Magic Bullet Suite is pretty good for adding quick looks to a sequence if all you want to do is whack on a preset and show a client something rough.
Mocha Pro AVX plugin from Boris - the remove module is close to magic (when it works - see my other thread about this) and I use the stabiliser all the time to lock down shots for cleaner animattes. iZotope is way more powerful and if you know what you're doing you'll get better results but if you want a quick and dirty clean up tool that will get rid of annoying hums, traffic noises or just add more gain than you'd normally be able to, then I've found it very useful. It's literally a big dial that you turn up or down. Very decent audio noise remover that is almost too basic. The presets will get you 90% there straight away but you can really dial it in if you need to including doing some decent post-reduction sharpening which doesn't look total balls. If you are dealing with any sort of noisy footage (almost anything shot by anyone nowadays it seems) then it is worth its weight in gold.
